Course: Cocktail
Cuisine: Mexican
Servings: 1 cocktail
- 2 ounces blanco tequila
- 1 ounce fresh red or pink grapefruit juice 2 grapefruits for a batch of 4-6
- 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
- 1/2 ounce simple syrup
- 1/2 ounce elderflower liqueur
Wipe the rim of a chilled double old-fashioned glass with a lime or grapefruit wedge. Dip in margarita salt if desired.
Combine tequila, grapefruit, lime juice, simple syrup, and elderflower liqueur in a cocktail shaker with a cup of ice.
Shake vigorously for 10 seconds and pour into a double old-fashioned glass with existing ice or over fresh ice. Optionally strain over a giant clear ice cube. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
I always use red or pink grapefruits. The darker red flesh of the red grapefruit is believed to be the sweeter of the two. Both work well, but red grapefruits give the margarita a nicer color.
It's important to use freshly squeezed citrus when making margaritas from scratch. invest in a handheld lemon/lime squeezer. You can also get larger handheld juicers for oranges and grapefruits. The flavor difference is exceptional!
Freeze your glasses to keep your drink cooler for longer. This is especially useful in the hot summer months.
Use "dirty" ice from the shaker, fresh ice cubes, or pour over a large ice cube for the ultimate presentation/experience.
