Hailing from the heart of Mexico, mezcal is a smoky and complex distilled liquor crafted from the agave plant. Unlike its cousin, Tequila, which primarily comes from blue agave, mezcal can be made from various agave varieties, contributing to its diverse flavor profile.
The unique production process involves roasting the agave hearts in underground pits, imparting mezcal with its signature smokiness and earthy undertones. Mezcal cocktails can be crafted similarly to tequila cocktails, benefiting from sweet, citrusy, and spicy flavors that enhance and balance the smoky profile. A few of my favorite cocktails are the Mezcal Bone Crusher, Mezcal Margarita, and my spicy mezcal cocktail.
