The Dark ‘n Stormy is an easy-to-make and delicious classic cocktail made with dark rum, ginger beer, and lime juice. The cocktail offers intense ginger, spice, and vanilla, with a touch of fresh citrus from the lime. It’s a nice change of pace from the Moscow Mule, delivering a similar vibe but with a sweeter profile.

Brief History

The cocktail originated in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. The primary ingredient, dark rum, is traditionally Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, a product of the Gosling family who arrived in Bermuda in 1806. Goslings trademarked the cocktail in 1991, meaning it can only officially be made with Goslings rum in bars and restaurants.

The Dark ‘n Stormy is a “built” cocktail, meaning it’s built right in the glass, eliminating the need for any bar tools other than a spoon for a brief stir.

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Dark 'n Stormy cocktail ingredients laid out on a wooden cutting board.
  • Dark rum: look for Goslings Black Seal Rum for the most authentic flavor. In terms of alternatives, look for any dark rum for the best balance of flavor.
  • Ginger beer: while any ginger beer will work, Goslings ginger beer is likely the most popular option and the easiest to find. Note, that non-alcoholic ginger beer is the preferred mixer. Remember, ginger ale is not a substitute for ginger beer. They’re wildly different in flavor.

Expert Tips

  • Use a tall highball glass for the best experience. This is the official glass for many fizzy cocktails such as the Americano or Whiskey Highball.
  • Chill your glasses in the freezer. This keeps your drink colder for longer.
  • Use plenty of ice and build the cocktail right within the glass. No bar tools are required. Gently stir to mix so it’s incorporated.
